Why studying Maths is a lot more important than just getting extra points in your Leaving Certificate.

We are living in an age of unprecedented change. Gone are the days of life-long employment and security enjoyed by our grand-parents. Never before in the history of mankind has change taken place so rapidly and so frequently and the experts agree that the speed and intensity of change is only going to increase in the years that lie before us! The evidence of this change can be seen if you pick up any newspaper. Increased unemployment, massive redundancies, economic uncertainty and increased workplace competition.

According to Harvard Business review it is estimated that the university graduate of today will go through an average of 3-4 career changes in different industries before they retire! That means today you could be in the mobile phone business and four or five years down the line a research scientist. The phrase to remember is change is automatic, progress is not. To guarantee your security and success in the years ahead a shift in thinking is needed. We must replace the idea of life long employment with the more up-to-date model of life long employability. What this simply means is that we need to develop our flexibility, learning and problem-solving skills in order to be able to adapt to the needs and requirements of future challenges. In another international study conducted by Harvard Business Review, it was shown that ones financial success in industry is directly linked with ones ability to solve problems. Otherwise stated, the bigger the problems you can tackle and solve in the shortest amount of time, the more you’ll get paid. This statement is re-iterated by self-made Billionaire and founder of Microsoft Bill Gates in his book the road ahead, “..the premium that society pays for skills is going to climb so my advice is to get a good formal education and then keep on learning. Acquire new interests and skills throughout your life.”

So what does all of this have to do with you studying Maths? Well the three success skills mentioned above, those being flexibility, learning, and problem-solving are all required when it comes to studying Maths. Flexibility in terms of trying out new ideas, learning in terms of the large volume of information required to secure that Honour and problem solving as this is what Maths is all about. By taking on the challenge of Maths you will be required to work hard, practice frequently and step up when the going gets tough, - all useful abilities to develop even if you never use Calculus or Matrices ever again. The study of Mathematics trains those problem solving, logical reasoning and critical thinking parts of your brain. The more you learn and challenge yourself, the more these inner mental muscles are developed and the more your stamina and mental strength increases. These qualities are yours, welcome, useful and practical additions to your tool-box and carried with you automatically, ready to be used for future problems and challenges.

It is true that Maths can be challenging at the best of times and it might be easier to justify not putting in the time or energy required to do well in the subject. Then again one can also say it is easier to not bother exercising and even easier to stay in bed instead of going to school in the first place. The point is, problem solving muscles can only be developed by, believe it or not, solving problems, and a problem is only a problem if it challenges you and causes you to step outside of your comfort zone. This is the realm of growth and the only way we can can actually grow and develop our capacities. You'll get plenty of opportunities to do this studying Maths! All this said, although it requires an investment of time and energy, studying Maths does not have to be boring! Motivation comes with having lots of reasons (motives) to study in the first place. The more compelling and personal you can make these reasons, the more motivated you will feel and the more enthusiastic and energy you will have when it comes to taking out your pen and paper and getting down to work. Also, studying Maths does not have to be difficult, using the right language, teaching methods, and interaction learning can take place quickly and easily and most importantly be remembered.

Digital Grinds has been reviewed by over 450 schools and has been used by over 18,000 students nationwide. Students using the software are amazed at the fact that studying Maths is not as hard as they previously imagined once they understand the tricks behind the problems they are facing. They are also delighted to learn about the practical, every-day, useful applications of the Maths they are studying. Ideas that seemed frivolous and pointless take on a whole new breathe of life when they are connected to tangible uses. This leads to a transformation in motivation and it doesn’t need to be stated that a motivated student is going to perform better than a student who doesn’t see the point of investing their energies learning a subject. As the peak performance coach Anthony Robbins talks about, “There are no such thing as lazy people, only people with impotent goals, those being goals which don’t inspire them!”. Read through our testimonials and see the result of this transformation from students who used Digital Grinds to help them create the results they wanted!
